Poetry Monday

It is Poetry Monday again, as organized by Rhian. This is an unfinished piece about growing up in the 80s.

Cold war kids grew up quiet
on monstered beds,
sucked satire from a British tit,
cowered before patriotism
even as our hearts lept.

We aged unwitnessed
between hippy Dad and hip hop kids
who passed the world,
one to the other,
over piggy's head

Walls fell. The monster now in the closet--
only we seem to see it;
who first knew doom, as children,
Not seeing it too late
or innured from birth

We live on, never blithe
but always a little chicken.
Suitcases, the estranged and winds
only haunt our darkest nights--
we still see the monster sometimes
from the corners of our eyes

And find we are known, if at all,
for empty fads of glam and greed
not our dark adapted eyes, and supine wills.
Even when the sky falls no-one will think of us;
old not before our time
but because of it.

Haven't seen the monster for a while
but stand, scotch in hand,
watching the curtains flap
over an open window
always ready to provide, the 'whimper'.

WTF Moment of the Day

In my local campus newspaper:

Deputy Prosecutor [speaking of an accused criminal]: "...within two months he is back on the prowl and attacking another defenseless woman."

Testimony of the 'defenseless' woman who successfully fought off the attack: "I kicked him twice in the groin and I bit his hand."

NEWS:- Heart in Shadows [new review]

New from Isabelle Spencer at RRT:

"[...] even not having read the previous books in the Maewyn's Prophecy series (which I'll be doing immediately) I can recommend A HEART IN SHADOWS fully. Ms. Veinglory writes with a sensuous and often wicked pen and always entertains the reader with her sexy and often naughty characters."

Last line...

What I am writing now: Father of Dragons (MM high fantasy)
Words so far: 29,576 out of a planned 60,000
Last line written: So she was strong enough to dig graves, but not to move injured men. Xeras supposed it was largely a matter of motivation.
What is happening: Our hero, Xeras, is injured and finds the only person who can help him is a spooky old mind-reading woman with plans of her own.

CHAT: Back Home

I am back, ready to get writing on 'Father of Dragons'. Saw some thrilling scenery... well, actually, not so much (see below).

The moving walkway is coming to an end....

Yes, I am off on another job interview. Currently I am in the final 2 for one job, the final 4 for another and the only one being interviewed for this--my back-up job (at a fun place, but only a 12 month contract and not in my specialty). Opportunities never come in the right order, but at least I should be able to avoid unemployment :)

Coming into land at Indianapolis
over fields made monocrome
by dark and fallow soil,
and snow
I try to read a land
I do not yet know

Ruffled fur
the tabby's wild mottles
shuffle and reform
Lines across his back
punctuation on his belly

In the flash of lightning
the language of forgotten gods
who in their madness
lost speech, but still
clap their hands for our attention

these thoughts are not mine
I just write down
what the world whispers
synesthesia
the blessing of
an open mind...

Patiently I string together
all the words I find.

CHAT:-- packing

I am in the early stages of packing. Regardless of where I end up going I will be leaving this apartment some time between July and December. So here I am going through things--a lot of which I have not looked at since last time I packed.

Here is an odd one. This is a sketch I did around 1999, I think. My drawing skills have improved a lot since then. What struck me is that as soon as I saw it I remembered what led me to draw it. I am not a great believer in the religious or spiritual. But one night I had a dream about a piece of jewelry. The picture doesn't do it justice. I still remember it very vividly. The face part was something like bone or ivory and the rest was gold and far more rounded than this with a preRaphaelite look to it. The stones looked like they might be opals. After years of not not giving this a moments thoughts I could "see" it is again. I may even have to have another go at drawing it more accurately.

I don't remember what, if anything, happened in the dream but I was left feeling this thing was important somehow. So I just thought I would post it...

NEWS:-- Tongue Tied [new review]

"The Wicca Man 01 – Tongue-Tied is the first book in the new Wicca Man series. Ms. Veinglory weaves a strong and magical world for her characters, and as the tension between witches and vampires grows, the chemistry between Sean and Thane sparks and sizzles. Paranormal readers will find this an enchantingly fun series to look forward to."

Looking For Something to Read?

Rhian has some great recommendations in terms of new releases with M/M well represented. And I'm not just saying that because she included Tongue Tied (although it was a contributing factor...). :)

I have committed to deliver "Father of Dragons" to Samhain five weeks from Friday. So if you see me online, shoo me back to my writing!

CHAT: Back Home

So I am back from my job interview. I decided to just be myself. I guess I will see how that goes. Looks like I have another interview for a 12-month postion lined up. Time to get the suit dry-cleaned again...

'Fairy Godlover' by Devi Sparks

Length: novel
Publisher: Phaze
Genre: erotic romance M/F (ebook)

Kelsey is a dedicated charity worker with an overworked vibrator but no man in her life for several years. Sebastian is a fairy guardian for children who somehow gets assigned to a very desirable fully grown women instead. The book opens with his appearance and Kelsy's hilarious and utterly believable response. Kelsey is a wonderful and very sympathetic heroine who is likeable throughout.

The only fly in the ointment is that at the end of his assignment Sebastian will have to leave, and the reader is never really left in much doubt that they will find a way around that. The middle section of the book is essentially a long series of sexual scenarios as Sebastian and Kelsey explore the sensual and developing romantic possibilities between them.

It is easy to see why many people love with book which is funny, romantic and sexy. Personally I found the lack of any substantial plot through the middle of the book something of a flaw. The one obstacle is introduced at the very beginning and soved at the very end. The sex in between was pretty good but I prefer something to be going on outside the bedroom as well ;) YMMV.

NEWS: The Temptation of Sebastian [new review]

Wilga Hill Boomarang at Coctail Reviews has taken the time to give us her thoughts on the Temptation of Sebastian, giving it a score of 5/5.

"Right from the first line I knew this book would be a winner. Written with excellence, the vibrant wording dances from the page. A writer with such talent, Emily Veinglory should be very proud of The Temptation of Sebastian."

NEWS: Tongue Tied [review]

The first review is in only four days after the release! Annie from the Romance Studio gives Tongue Tied 5/5!

"The Wicca Man: Tongue-Tied shows promise for an exciting continuation. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is gloriously twisted and convoluted, maintaining the reader's attention through to the end. Tongue-Tied is a winner from outstanding author Emily Veinglory."

NEWS: Journey's End, my terrible sketches

I was tidying up today and came across a few old sketches that made about fours years ago when I first started writing Journey's End, now available from Torquere Press. Other than showing why I depend more on my writing skills than my art, I thought people might be interested in seeing Castel, as I do. Here he is going into his room at the Journey's End ale house (and brothel) and with one of the villains of the piece.

CHAT: Hiding...

I need to stop writing about gay sex-slash-romance and work on my science writing. Dr Emily has things to do, I must put Emily Veinglory back in the box for a while... so of course now plot bunnies are running rampent through my head and setting fire to things just to get my attention.

REVIEW: Adam and E-V-E Bridget Midway

Length: novelette
Publisher: Phaze
Genre: erotic romance M/F (ebook)

Adam is a human soldier and E-V-E a cyborg. They are sent, apparantly alone, to defend the world against the attack of a giant robot and the answer turns out to be sex. Okay, so the plot is implausable, but in a cheerful pop-sci fi sort of way that justifies the 'make love, not war' premise of this short story.

Adam has a few issues with robots, and doesn't yet know that E-V-E has enhancements beyond the chip in her brain. E-V-E has never thought of herself as human until a sudden sexual awakening changes her perspective. 'Adam and E-V-E' is a fairly quick read, but fun. There is some steamy sex and just enough plot and characterisation to be a fully developed story.

NEWS: The Lesser Spotted Emily

Only very rarely is Emily Veinglory actually captured on film. But if you peer closely at the side bar of the blog for WOoGI (Writers of Genre Fiction in Indiana) you will see a group photo. In honor of Easter I will send a purple plot bunny to the first person to guess which one is me.

p.s. yes, I am serious about the bunny. I will be asking for an address if you are the first to get it right :)

NEWS: King of Dragons, Kind of Men [reviews]

KODKOM (as I like to call it) came out in ebook form on February 27th. The paperback release has been pushed back a little to October 16th. Sadly this will probably be a few months after I leave town--where I have the local Borders actually actively offering to hold a book signing for me. However, with a little luck I with still be working somewhere in the US of A and might be able to pop back to visit and do my own cheap-arse version of a book tour. I am currently hanging out, expecting the first full royalty report any minute now.

I was very interested in seeing the reviews for this story as I expected it might cause some consternation. KODKOM is a menage (MMF) story, but it is not erotic. I think the erotic romance genre is great, but polyamory is not just a sexual kink. In fact, in most cases polyamorous relationships take longer to become sexual and may involve less sexual activity overall as the relationship is more complex. But anyway, the first reviews are in and on the whole I am very pleased.

Speculative Romance Online says: "You won't be sending this one back to the kitchen. For those who have shied away from trying non-traditional romantic pairings because of explicit sexual content, here's a great way to increase the range of your reading palate. The bedroom door stays firmly closed, but the windows into the characters' hearts stay wide open."

Over at Fallen Angels I got a 5/5 and "recommended read" which I am showing off here. Michelle writes: "Emily Veinglory is a personal favorite of mine, just for the fact that her writing is so exquisitely rendered; it’s almost poetic sometimes. She does a most admirable job at world building here, and layers plot upon plot ever so seamlessly. Watching these three stumble along in life and love is poignantly entertaining, for sure. I love, love, love this foray into the medieval setting with a delicious, non-traditional twist. More, please!" (It would be fair to say that Michelle is a favorite of mine).

At Coffee Time Romance the lack of explicit sex was noticed, but fortunately not a disappointment: "I expected this book to be a tale of hot sex that would keep me warm all night. Instead, I found an enchanting medieval story that will forever have a special place in my heart."
